Special Session – The Extraordinary Session called by Governor Heineman dealing with pipeline siting legislation will close on November 22nd. Citizens across Nebraska have been very involved in this process. I have heard from many people in District 3 and your feedback was important as a reasonable solution was sought.

Bellevue Veteran’s Parade – The parade was held on November 5th in Old Towne. Our community puts on a wonderful event every year. It was great to see so many in attendance to honor and thank our Veterans! Veterans issues remain one of my top priorities in the legislature.

Sovereign Native Youth Leadership – I was invited to meet with the Sovereign Native Youth Leadership participants in Omaha last month. These future leaders serve as ambassadors of their schools. More information on the program and pictures of the event can be found on the District 3 web site. http://news.legislature.ne.gov/dist03/

Happy Thanksgiving! We should reflect on our blessings no matter the day. Even when heated issues arise we can be thankful for the legislative process in Nebraska allowing citizens a voice in their government. As we break from Special Session for the holiday I’m reminded to put life in perspective. Jacquie and I wish your family the best over this Thanksgiving holiday!

Sovereign Native Youth Leadership

November 16th, 2011

The Sovereign Native Youth Leadership group met on October 20th in Omaha. The youth leaders took part in a panel discussion at a Native American law firm, and met with Matt Placezk who makes animal sculptures for the Henry Doorly Zoo. The visit also included a tour of the zoo and discussion about Nebraska tribal culture being a part of the new zoo entranceway project.

Senator Price joined the group for lunch at Spaghetti Works in the Old Market. It was good to meet with the program participants and learn about their leadership projects. Below are pictures of Senator Price meeting with the youth leaders.

The Sovereign Native Youth Leadership Program is training the next generation of tribal community leaders. The program participants act as role models, mentors, and leadership ambassadors to their schools. The students work on skills in economic development, government, health and wellness, cultural issues, communication, and education. The goal of the program is to give Native students the skills to be leaders and servants of their people. You can learn more about the program and the participants projects at http://indianaffairs-state-neus.presencehost.net/ This video shows some of the highlights of the leaders involved in the program http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvkYdBkUDhc
