District Three October Newsletter

October 2012

Dear Fellow Nebraskan:

I’m eager for the 2013 legislative session to begin. I wanted to share some thoughts about District Three and the upcoming session as legislators prepare for next year. I’m working on ideas to further economic development and lower taxes, we have a lot of success to build on.

The groundbreaking for the new STRATCOM Headquarters was earlier this month. This project will lead to 400 new jobs, and strengthen the high-tech capacity of our military. District Three remains a great place to live for our Veterans and those currently serving. GI Jobs magazine rated Bellevue University and UNO among the top military friendly institutions nationally.

Governor Heineman announced that Fidelity Investments will be building a new data center in Papillion. The data center is a $200 million investment that will create 30 to 35 jobs. Senator Cornett’s LB1118, which I supported, was important in Fidelity’s decision to build in Papillion. My priority bill, LB1080 passed last session and will further job creation. Yahoo! announced plans for a new facility in Papillion after these bills were signed. CNN Money and Money Magazine ranked Sarpy County, Papillion, and Bellevue high nationally in categories of jobs and livability. Nebraska is sending a strong message that we will compete for high-tech jobs.

During the interim I looked into our transportation and telecommunications infrastructure, and toured a telephone company in Pierce. The tour was hosted by Senators Sullivan and Dubas, highlighting improvements in rural telecommunications. I took part in a briefing with the Department of Roads which included additional projects funded by LB84. I’m eager to see these improvements carried on in all areas of our state.

I’ve enjoyed seeing many of you at area events during the interim. I’ll be sharing your input with my colleagues as we prepare for the 2013 session. This is an exciting time for District Three! You help make this possible with your ongoing communications. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,
Scott Price

Dear Resident,

I wanted to give you an update on what’s happening in your state legislature.

LB819 & LB999Two of my bills are being heard in the Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee today. LB819 provides treatment of military medals as unclaimed property. LB999 authorizes the display of an honor and remember flag at public buildings.

Priority Bill LB1080 – LB1080 is my priority bill for 2012. This bill provides a property tax exemption, and a sales and use tax exemption relating to data centers. This legislation would attract high tech businesses to the area. One example is Yahoo! who is considering a relocation of a facility from Portland, Oregon to Papillion. Companies like Yahoo! are seeking a business climate attractive to young people that includes a strong sense of community. LB1080 would strengthen that climate for the metro area.

Unicameral Resources – The state has a good web site to follow everything taking place in the Unicameral at http://www.leg.ne.gov/. This valuable resource allows citizens to look up bill information, committee hearing schedules, and contact information for all senators. You can also access NET’s streaming of the legislature from the web site.

Contact Information- You should always feel welcome to contact me – email, phone, email newsletter, and the district web site are ways to say informed and communicate with me.

If you would like to receive the newsletter electronically, please notify me at sprice@leg.ne.gov. Your e-mail address will never be shared or distributed and only used to receive legislative updates from myself regarding the third district and the Nebraska Unicameral. http://news.legislature.ne.gov/dist03/
Thank you and looking forward to talking to you soon!

2012 Session The 2012 Legislative Session will start on January 4th. The session will cover 60 days this year ending on April 12th. The Special Session this fall was a showcase of how our Unicameral system allows citizens greater involvement in their government and helps bring leaders together to address our challenges. I look forward to continuing that momentum in 2012.

Merry Christmas -This is a wonderful time of the year when we enjoy the company of loved ones, reflect on the past year, and share hopes for the coming year. Faith, hope and charity come to mind. These are values that have been with us since our nation was founded. These values have helped us in good times and endure in times of struggle. Our thoughts are especially with those facing tough times or have loved ones serving overseas. It is my hope for the coming year we’ll remember these values beyond the season as we encounter challenges and seize opportunities. We give thanks for our blessings and remember the meaning of the season. Jacquie and I wish your family a Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year!

Contact Information- I have enjoyed meeting with constituents over the past months. Some of you have even stopped by the office. I look forward to seeing you at the area holiday events going on. I have listened to your concerns and ideas for the upcoming session. That involvement is important in the legislative process. You should always feel welcome to contact me – email, phone, email newsletter, and the district web site are ways to help you stay informed and communicate with me.
