PRINCIPLES PRESENTATION

Welcome to the web page for the Nebraska Legislature’s Tax Modernization Committee. The Committee was created this past session pursuant to Legislative Resolution 155, to study Nebraska’s tax system and make recommendations, if necessary, for any changes. The membership of the committee includes all members of the Revenue Committee, the chairs of the Agriculture, Appropriations, Education, Health and Human Services, and the Planning Committees. In addition, two Senators were appointed at large by the Executive Committee.

The work of the committee will be divided into two distinct parts:

Working Sessions – These sessions are intended to provide committee members with important background information, an overview of Nebraska’s existing tax system, and analysis of that system by national experts on tax policy, economics and tax reform initiatives. Committee members will be able to interact with these experts and each other as they review our tax system and discuss potential areas for further analysis.

Public Hearings – As part of our charge under LR155, we will be conducting five (5) public hearings around the state. This is your opportunity as a citizen to voice your opinion about the structure of our state tax system. Each hearing will have an agenda with specific topics seeking public comment. Please go to the Public Hearings link for further details about the hearings and how you can participate.

A report of the committee’s work will be released in mid-December.

As chairperson, I have decided to make the working sessions open to the public, to provide as much transparency to our work as possible. Please note, however, that the working sessions are intended for just that – working. The committee will not be accepting public comment, testimony, or any other form of public participation at the working sessions. Public participation will be limited to the Public Hearings.

If you would like to submit comments or suggestions in lieu of testifying at one of the hearings, please go to the Comments link for further details.

We look forward to our hearings around the state and welcome your participation.

Senator Galen Hadley, District 37
Tax Modernization Committee Chairperson
